The European ARTificial Intelligence Lab (AI Lab) is a follow-up project to the European Digital Art and Science Network, a creative collaboration between scientific institutions, Ars Electronica and cultural partners throughout Europe that unites science and digital art. The European ARTificial Intelligence Lab follows on from this and addresses visions, expectations and fears that we associate with artificial intelligence. The consortium consists of 13 cultural institutions from Europe with Ars Electronica as coordinator. This online archive provides an overview of all activities carried out during the project's lifetime from 2018 to 2021. It also provides information about the network itself, the residency artists and juries, and the project partners involved. The AI Lab is co-funded by the EU program "Creative Europe (2014-2020)" and by the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Civil Service and Sport.

• Info (DE): Neben den wissenschaftlichen, technologischen und wirtschaftlichen Aspekten konzentriert sich das European ARTificial Intelligence Lab stark auf die rechtlichen, kulturellen, pädagogischen und ethischen Dimensionen der Künstlichen Intelligenz. Dies ermöglicht ein ganzheitliches Modell, das menschliche Werte und elementare Fragen, was KI tun oder nicht tun sollte, ebenso berücksichtigt wie die Frage, wie und von wem KI-Systeme entwickelt, eingesetzt, genutzt und überwacht werden. Aus der Perspektive von 13 großen Kulturakteuren in Europa und unter der Leitung von Ars Electronica zentriert das European ARTificial Intelligence Lab Visionen, Erwartungen und Ängste, die wir mit der Vorstellung einer zukünftigen, allumfassenden künstlichen Intelligenz verbinden.
Während die Industrie enorme Geldsummen in Spitzentechnologien zur Entwicklung intelligenter Systeme pumpt, bringen wir Künstler mit Forschungseinrichtungen und Wissenschaftlern zusammen, um eine Lücke im Umgang mit den sozialen Komponenten und politischen Fragen zu schließen, die sich aus diesen enormen technologischen Fortschritten ergeben.
• Info (EN): In addition to scientific, technological and economic aspects, the European ARTificial Intelligence Lab focuses strongly on legal, cultural, educational and ethical dimensions of Artificial Intelligence. This allows a holistic model that considers human values and elementary questions of what AI should or should not do, as well as how AI systems are developed, deployed, used and monitored, and by whom. From the perspective of 13 major cultural operators in Europe and led by Ars Electronica, the European ARTificial Intelligence Lab centers visions, expectations and fears that we associate with the conception of a future, all-encompassing artificial intelligence.
While industries are pumping massive amounts of money into cutting-edge technologies to develop intelligent systems, we are connecting artists with research institutions and scientists to fill a gap in dealing with the social components and political questions arising from these enormous technological advances.

Ubuntu – The Other Me! by Simon Weckert (DE)
The video journey wants to create a dialog between the artworks by the artist and AI-driven technologies in the process of making and creating. On the one hand, the scenario shows the environment the artist is working in with technologies as a tool that affect his artworks. On the other hand, it shows how these tools shape and manipulate his creative output. By doing so, he would like to show how machines were introduced to optimize the working processes, save time or increase accuracy,and open the question of how we became so dependent on them that we often forget what they actually do. Instead of hyping or damning the technology, he would like to invite visitors to reflect on the meaning and modes of existence of technology in a critical and sober way. Biography: Simon Weckert teilt gerne sein Wissen über ein breites Spektrum von generativem Design bis hin zu Physical Computing. Sein Fokus liegt auf der digitalen Welt unter der Reflexion aktueller gesellschaftlicher Aspekte, von technologieorientierten Untersuchungen bis hin zur Diskussion aktueller gesellschaftlicher Themen.
