Description
With “The Translucent St. Stephen’s Cathedral,” the Ars Electronica Futurelab has achieved yet another milestone in the visualization of historic buildings using 3D laser scanning: Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral was scanned with over 20 billion measurement points, and this resulting point cloud was enhanced with high-resolution images in collaboration with Scanlab Projects of London to provide a realistic 360° panoramic view at 28 interesting locations in and around the cathedral. However, due to the transparency of the point cloud, the structure of the building itself remains visible and allows completely new insights into the building.
