Digital Musics & Sound Art Anerkennung - Honorary Mention 2004

OUR UR

domenico sciajno, Alvin Curran
The idea behind this recording session was to establish a parallel perspective able to reflect the time-structural displacement in the making of spontaneous music. Curran plays his wide range of samples and pre-processes them in real time. This results in the first two layers of sound. The unprocessed samples are captured in real time and processed by Sciajno through his Max/MSP patches. This generates two other layers of sound. Two more layers are then added by Sciajno, generating sound with other patches. Other Cities is not an improvised recording session, but a composition by Sciajno, done using Curran’s samples, playing piano.

Alvin Curran (I) began his musical journey with a fortuitous bang in 1965, in Rome. Co-founder of the radical music collective MUSICA ELETTRONICA VIVA, Curran is a solo performer and a composer for Rome’s avant-garde theater scene. Considered one of the leading figures in making music outside of concert halls, Curran developed a series of concerts for lakes, ports, parks, buildings, quarries and caves. In 1990, he began a visually striking series of sound installations in collaboration with Melissa Gould.

Domenico Sciajno (I), born 1965, double bass player and composer; studied instrumental and electronic composition with Gilius Van Bergeijk and double bass at the Royal Conservatory of Den Haag in Holland. Since 1994, Sciajno has been present at some of the most important festivals as a player, improviser and composer.
