Phantom Orchard
Ikue Mori,
Zeena Parkins
Featuring Ikue Mori’s signature pulse program texture maps and Parkins’ radically distinct, “postharp” playing, Phantom Orchard marks another creative moment in NYC’s downtown music community. Simultaneously improvisatory in its leanings and mathematical in its compositional cohesion, Phantom Orchard is a combination of sonic forces and similarly eclectic player/composer/ processors that clearly needed to happen. Mori and Parkins’ remarkable abilities in extending the harmonic range of their respective instruments, when paired together, results in an aggressive yet contemplative, culturally referential and yet idiomatically unique recording that made Phantom Orchard a standout document for this year’s jury.
