Children With Diabetes
Children With Diabetes is an on-line community for children, families and adults with diabetes. Through education, professional support and peer support, we are changing the expectations for care for children with type 1 diabetes throughout the world. We teach families to be advocates for their own care and to insist on the current bestpractices as defined by peer-reviewed science.
Children With Diabetes exemplifies the potential of the Internet to do good—in this case, by changing the expectations of care for children with type 1 diabetes. Before CWD, families accepted care regimens that were deficient both in medical and in social terms. By educating families about the current best-practices in diabetes care, CWD encourages its visitors to seek out health care teams that offer better care options, ensuring that their children lead lives as healthy and normal as medical science allows.
The goal of Children With Diabetes is to provide education and support to families who have children with diabetes. Through tuition, families will learn about today's best-practices and be able to select a diabetes care regimen that affords their children the best possible health outcome. Through peer-support, families learn how to cope with the challenges of raising a child with a chronic illness and how to help their child thrive in spite of its diabetes.
Children With Diabetes is used by families who have kids with diabetes, adults and teenagers with diabetes, as well as health care professionals. Anyone with diabetes benefits from the tuition and peer-support that is freely available at CWD.

Children With Diabetes was started in June 1995 by Jeff Hitchcock, parent of a child with diabetes. Jeff was made redundant and started CWD the same day. The web site has grown steadily ever since. As of spring 2004, the site contains over 20,000 pages of unique content and hosts between 14,000 and 16,000 visitors per day from around the world. Web site traffic statistics are open to the public at http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/stats/. CWD is run by one technical contractor and two employees, one of whom is responsible for all Internet-based activities. He is supported by the technical contractor. The other employee is responsible for the conferences that Children With Diabetes holds every year.
