Katja Zavolka
Katja Zavoloka’s music consists of intensive varied sound motions and unexpected combinations piped into carefully controlled electronic flows. Ukrainian native culture and nature never try to predict anything; things can turn out in ways one just cannot predict. Her music is very unusual from a structural point of view. When asked about her motivation for building such diverse and complicated constructions, she explained that her intention was to produce increasingly frank music that could reflect her momentary shades of feelings and emotions. She also pointed out that her music is intended to be a natural expression of her private freedom. The invented sound style Zavoloka projects can be quite impulsive, utilizing fractured pulse fragments and abstract melodic bits to create vocally influenced hybrids of stumbling, unpredictable poly-rhythmics coupled with warped sonic objects, somewhere between noise and melody: an unstable and unwieldy sound in permanent transition.
Katja Zavoloka (UA), born 1981, is a musician and graphic designer from Kiev. Her music is very unusual and challenging from a compositionally formal point of view and sometimes combines electronic sounds with rough unprocessed voices, sung by common Ukrainian people. She releases on Andrey Kiritchenko’s Nexsound Label, Laton and Zeromoon and has a collaboration project with Berlin’s poetess and musician AGF.
