Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Hal Hickel
This reel represents only a fraction of the animation work completed by ILM for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Man’s Chest. It provides a good overview of the challenges we faced.

Our work ranged from a tiny hermit crab to the enormous kraken, but the greatest challenge by far was the crew of the Flying Dutchman, in particular its captain Davy Jones.

ILM used a new on-set motion-capture technique for the body movements, while all facial expressions were crafted by our animators.

The result is an amazing collaboration between the actors on set, and the animators at ILM.
Hal Hickel (US) joined Industrial Light & Magic in 1996 as an animator for The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Hickel’s special interest in animation lies in the challenge of integrating fantastic characters and creatures into live-action films. He has since supervised the animation work on Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Dreamcatcher, and Pirates of the Caribbean.
