Wikiartpedia-La Libera Enciclopedia dell'Arte e le Culture delle Reti Telematiche

“Wikiartpedia” is a free encyclopedia of art and network cultures. It focuses on net art, digital art, media art, hacktivism and digital culture, but also on all the other ambits of art and culture that are increasingly connected to them in the past and present.
“Wikiartpedia” is an open instrument to write and read, in which every net user can participate writing new entries or modifying the existing ones. The result is something that goes beyond the addition of the individual knowledge of the participants, because it adds the implicit negotiation of a common agreement about the significance of every single item.
The “Wikiartpedia” model is pluralist in order to provide information free of censorship, which is therefore fluid and negotiable.
“Wikiartpedia” is part of the Center for Research and Documentation on Art and Network cultures— uCAN (pronounced “you can”), which Tommaso Tozzi runs at the Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara, whose aim is the research, documentation and promotion of this field of culture through the free participation of the users.
Students from Tommaso Tozzi’s classes write the entries for the encyclopedia. Through this, the results of the online creations of the New Technology Art School (three-year course in multimedia arts and two-year course in net art and digital) of the university and of the other schools are interconnected with the network and at the same time become the instrument for the following students to learn and create new knowledge.
A new culture is coming into existence, which, though interconnected with the global culture of the network, is assuming its own physiognomy and the specific local character of the community of the school. This culture is in part characterized by the real relationships and in part distributed in the virtual archives and relationships. The local community of the school renders and participates in the global community, providing the results of its studies on the net, free and without any conditions.
The contents of the encyclopedia are mainly the result of students’ research. So far, about 1,000 students have been involved and there are 1,500 users of “Wikiartpedia”.

Wikiartpedia continues the experience that began with BBS Hacker Art, founded by Tommaso Tozzi in 1990 and continued in 1993 with the Fiorence-based Strano network’s activity on communication, art and digital rights. In 1997 Tommaso Tozzi started Web Disk—Una Bio-Enciclopedia (http://www.strano.net/wd/welcome.html), which continues from 2000 in the Hacker Art website (http://www.hackerart.org) and from the 2002 in the online database Archivio Hacker Art (http://www.ecn.org/ hackerart), also created by Tommaso Tozzi. He started the Wikiartpedia project in 2004, hosted in the European Counter Network (http://www.ecn.org) Server with the collaboration of the people at ECN. Since 2004 many of the old entries in the Hacker Art Archive and others of Tozzi’s projects have been moved to the new Wikiartpedia, a transfer that is still continuing.
