BUG

Mark Bain
The “BUG” project is a permanent site-specific sound installation located in Berlin at Brunnenstrasse 9. Done in collaboration with the architect Arno Brandlhuber of B&K architects, this work is unique in that it’s the first time a new complete building has been knowingly wired up to sense sound and vibration and present it live to an anonymous public. Located in the former eastern sector of the city the building is designed, built and owned by the architect. The five story mixed-use structure contains gallery spaces on the ground floor along with private living and studio space above. Conceived as a type of architectonic microphone, this project utilizes eight seismological sensors permanently embedded in the concrete at various points throughout the building. Micro-vibrations traveling within the matrix of materials are converted to an electric signal that are then amplified and mixed down to a live two-channel stereo output. This sound is available 24 hours a day via a headphone jack located on the facade at the street level constantly rendering the structure’s acoustic fingerprint. The proliferation of portable headphones readily carried by individuals for use with mobile phones, mp3 players and iPods allow the spectator to “jack in” to the building and thus the “BUG” functions as a delivery device and amplifier of sounds and actions that surround everyday lives.
