The Tor Project

The “Tor Project” is a non-profit enterprise dedicated to the research and development of tools, technologies, education, and advocacy of online privacy and anonymity. Our products are released as free software, free documentation and a volunteer-run “Tor” network. As a result, we are the largest anonymity network on the Internet today. We estimate that roughly 2,000 volunteers currently run relays and around half a million people use *Tor* daily. There have been 30 million downloads of “Tor” over the past two years.
The objectives of the “Tor Project” are to develop and establish a community-run network that provides reliable anonymity and privacy to anyone with the “Tor” software. We want to be the leaders in the relevant fields of research as well as the domain experts in anonymity and privacy online. We need a large community of people working as peers in order to achieve these goals. A decentralized model removes the need to trust any one entity over another and provides for long-term sustainability of the community.

Tor was originally designed, implemented and deployed as a third-generation onion-routing project of the Naval Research Laboratory. It was originally developed with the U.S. Navy in mind for the primary purpose of protecting government communications. Today it is used every day for a wide variety of purposes by the military, journalists, law enforcement officers, activists and many others. The “Tor Project” is composed of a growing group of people committed to providing online anonymity and privacy. The list of active and past contributors to “Tor” can be found at https://www.torproject.org/people.
