Kloop

The Kloop Media Foundation’s primary goal is to develop journalism and new media in the Kyrgyz Republic. It does this by developing websites that work as a space for free expression and training journalists and bloggers. The main project is the “Kloop.kg” youth web portal. This fulfills two distinct functions: a news service with material by young journalists and a blogging platform for everyone.
The “Kloop.kg” web portal was established in June 2007 with support from the Dutch-based Hivos Foundation. During the first two years of activity its news service has become an important source of high-quality news for and about the Kyrgyz Republic. Material for the news service is produced by high-school and university students trained in the foundation’s media school. Annually more than 60 students participate in the training, and some of them have already been hired by other media. The blog-hosting platform at “Kloop.kg” now is the biggest in the Kyrgyz Republic (with more than 1,600 blogs as of March 2010).
The Kloop New Media School provides journalistic training for high-school and university students. Its main emphasis is on the development of practical skills. From the very beginning all students must start producing material that fits criteria of Western journalism (the BBC is used as a reference and role model). After review by the editor (of course, in the beginning there is always more editing) the material is published by the “Kloop.kg” news service. This motivates students, gives them important skills of working with the editor and under time-pressure, adds articles to the portfolio of work and provides access to feedback from their audience.
The average age of journalists contributing to the news service at “Kloop.kg” and studying at the New Media School is around 15 to 18. They deal with a broad range of events related to the Kyrgyz Republic: from politics to sports, from culture to economics. Despite their youth, “Kloop.kg” journalists often cover major events in the country much faster and much more accurate than other media.
During the April 7 revolt in Kyrgyzstan, despite possible threat of serious pressure from the authorities, “Kloop.kg” published information about the first protests in the town of Talas, when almost all other the media were silent.
