Precise Peter

Martin Schmidt
Ever since the birth of his son, precise Peter has been looking forward to this day. The little tike is going to be introduced to the ins and outs of the family ritual at last! The fish has been prepared, the garden is ready and the sun is shining just as planned. The celebratory dinner can begin! “Precise Peter” is an amusing reflection about a barbecue which, to all intents and purposes, could have taken place in my own family. The son’s delight at being allowed to participate for the first time in the world of grown-ups exceeds even his father’s pleasure at seeing the family ritual unfold according to his well-honed plans.
In keeping with the father’s character, the world in the film is geometric. Every frame, every sequence and every object corresponds to an angle of 90 degrees. The color spectrum is typical of that of a holiday photo, illuminated for posterity by Photoshop. The precision of the 3D computer animation (Autodesk Maya) proved itself to be well suited to the manipulation of the film’s world. However, an animatic of finely detailed drawings was also needed as a starting point for an accurate execution of the idea.
