Prix
The Prix Ars Electronica Archive is a collection enabling search and viewing of all the submissions since 1987. The award-winning projects are documented with catalogue texts and audio-visual media. All other submissions can be searched by title/artist and displayed with year, category in list form. Occursus cum novo
Achim Stößer
The computer arts today are still distinguished by a concentration upon mere aesthetics of information. On one hand, this leads to aesthetically extraordinarily well-done images - for this kind of art is definitely immanent to the medium -, on the other hand, quite often the historism of the 20th century simply leads to imitations or copies of Op-Art or Minimal Art works.
The computer generated animation "Occursus cum novo" is formally built to a scheme deriving from music - the rondo. This means, the film is divided into two parallel strings of action that are interchanged, although these two levels of reality are not absolutely independent from each other.
In the final sequence, both worlds melt into an entity that leaves it to the viewer to decide, how to consider this amalgamation. Only in this sequence, when objects from one world penetrate into the other, the surprising relations of size become visible. Simultaneously, the imitation or sketching of real objects tries to establish a connection between Art, Nature, Technology and Science. (A. Stößer)
Technical background:
The work was realized with a raytracing procedure (Vera Raytracer, Repros, Waxi).
The music for the animation was made by Dr. Heinrich Müller, University of Karlsruhe.
Achim Stößer, born 1963 in Durmersheim near Karlsruhe. Already at the age of 13 first experiences in computer graphics with a HP 9830 with table plotter as well as with conventional graphics (pencil and charcoal drawings). Since 1981 regular publications in various magazines, e.g. in the “Mikrocomputer Jahrbuch” series and in “Programmbibliothek Mikrocomputer”. 1983 graduation from High School and begin of informatics studies at Karlsruhe University. Since 1986, computer graphics with the raytracing software of the Institute for Operating and Dialog Systems of Karlsruhe University are created. Besides that, Achim Stößer cooperates in the enhancement of the software for foto-realistic computer grapics. In 1987, the computer animation “Occursus cum novo” is created with a grant by Prix Ars Electronica '87, which was juedged for the second place at the 7e Forum International des Nouvelles Images de Monte Carlo in the “Realisme” Category. 1988 participation at the exhibition “Back to Nature – The Art of The Past 20 Years” in Karlsruhe.
