Computergraphik Anerkennung - Honorary Mention 1988

Kreis mit Pi

Stefan Holtel

Our work "Circle with Pi" symbolizes the introverted way of programming in present day's society. This is only one aspect of pointing out the self-insidiousness of human thinking and acting and to show the technical Limes its boundaries. It reflects somehow the flight of spirit that - having broken the bonds of terrestrian insufficiency - leaves the "Here And Now" on its eternal quest for the infinite.
A change of paradigmas of methods and kinds of systems development seems unavoidable to us in the face of merely pragmatically-oriented programming techniques. (S. Holtel)

Technical background:

The work was realized on an IBM-compatible PC (Hercules Graphic Card) with custom software. Fridtjof Detlefs was responsible for the technical side of the matter.
Stefan Holtel, born 1963 in Bad Bentheim/FRG. Already during his schooltime, Stefan Holtel became noticed in the “Free Design” class for his works like “Futuristics for The White Apron Man” (1978), “EIectromagnetically Controlled Plotter” (1980), “The Monument of The Unknown Pupil” (1982). In 1980, Stephan Holtel bought his first Personal Computer and made his first experiences in computer graphics. With his brother he founded the publicity company “holtel graphics” that existed till 1987. 1985–86 he studied informatics at Braunschweig Technical University, stressing upon Theoretical Informatics. Consequently he was trained to be mathematical-technical assistant with an insurance company. The ideas of theoretical informatics always influence Stephan Holtel's work and set up the connection between the computer hardware and the fundamental limitations of programming.
