Gallop Racer II

Pascal Roulin, Thierry Prieur
The 30 animated film Gallop Racer2 is the opening sequence of the video game Gallop Racer2 for a play-station, which we created for the Japanese game producer Tecmo.
The scene plays in a futuristic atmosphere at a kind of minimalist race course. It centers on the horse alone, because we wanted to show what it is that is so spectacular about a gallop race. At the same time, though, we also wanted to illustrate the "realistic" dimension of a horse race, in which winning ultimately depends on how well the player has mastered every single movement, every one of the horse's muscles. Thus we animated the horse in the film using the results of an optical motion-capture of a horse, which submitted to this treatment with a donkey's patience. We used various rendering methods to achieve this goal: a metallic appearance for the horse we were analyzing, wire-frame models and radiological treatment (x-rays) for the movement analysis.
The music by Celmar Engel further emphasizes the pulsing character of the race and the rhythm of the gallop.
