The Third and The Seventh

Alex Roman
Architecture through the cinematographic lens. The visual fusion between the third and the seventh arts.

This brief description defines the declaration of aesthetic principles that underlies the _Third&Seventh_ project: a full CG animated piece that tries to illustrate architecture art from a photographic point of view where the main subjects are already-built spaces. Sometimes in an abstract way, sometimes surreal.
Initially I didn’t intend to make the piece that long, it was not planned that way. In the beginning, it was just to be a simple show-reel of some jobs I’ve been collecting over time.

Then I thought of giving it a narrative history, but I couldn’t shape it. In the end, it became a mixture with a character (the photographer and his camera) with no history. I see it as a journey through architectural elements from the closed to the open and from darkness to light, told through the eyes of a photographer and nature (with lots of surrealist elements). The intention was to bring and mix the cinematographic language and aesthetics with the traditional architectural world. In terms of production it was a quite relaxed process, and I took several breaks, spending time on research (both technical and natural parts), etc.

Alex Roman (ES), born Jorge Seva. “Alex Roman” is an artistic alias for publishing independent work. After being trained in traditional painting at academies, I discovered this other world called CG. After school, I made the move to Madrid and began working at a visual-effects company. That stint did not last too long due to the lack of demand for visual effects in the Spanish market at the time. It was then that I switched into the viz (architectural visualization) business. I have now redirected my career to commercials and film direction.
