_L’ère bête_ is a medieval farce dealing with the notions of humanity and bestiality.
In the Middle Ages, a sow and a beggar are invited to a carnival where a crowd of masked men have fun in judging and torturing animals as if they were human beings. Our heroes are arrested and judged in their turn.
The film shows an archaic pagan carnival inspired by Flemish painting as well as surrealism. We follow the two heroes in a universe with its own internal logic that we cannot completely understand and where humanity and bestiality turn out to be intimately related. The illustrative look as well as the original music on ancient instruments contribute to making this crazy vision of ancient times real
