Digital Musics & Sound Art Auszeichnung - Award of Distinction 2012

#tweetscapes

Anselm Venezian Nehls, Tarik Barri
_#tweetscapes_ instantly converts all German Twitter messages into abstract sounds as they are being sent. It is a real-time sonification of what is happening in the German Twitter-sphere, as well as an interactive composition, performed collectively by Germany’s Twitter users.

*#tweetscapes* aims to add a sensual element to the development of discussion topics and the rhythm of the online dialog. Not only does this allow unique soundscapes to arise, but *#tweetscapes* shows the social network from a radically different perspective.

The Twitter messages are being sonified according to a fixed set of rules: tweets including a #hashtag (a thematic keyword), direct replies to another user, re-tweets (forwarded messages) and trending topics are each treated differently. For any possible topic of conversation, one individual, characteristic sound is created algorithmically, making it possible to conceive the development of the collective “multilogue” intuitively—and to sensually experience the overall mood of the Twitter-sphere at any given moment. Twitter becomes an ambience, the user becomes part of the data stream.

_#tweetscapes_ was originally developed on behalf of Deutschlandradio Kultur in 2011 and is being broadcast on its program regularly, allowing German Twitter users to interact with the artwork live on the radio. In 2012, it has been complemented by a visualization and takes the form of a 24/7 audiovisual live stream on _http://tweetscapes.de_, but also of an audiovisual surround installation called _#tweetspace_. Either way, the audience can use their mobile phones or computers to interact with the work through Twitter messages.

**Tarik Barri** (NL), born 1979, is an audiovisual composer and software developer. With tools such as Max/MSP, Java and SuperCollider he develops new applications for audiovisual performance, composition and data-representation. Using these tools, Barri aims to discover new synergies and aesthetics in the combination of image and sound. Barri has performed and displayed his works at Sonic Acts, Ars Electronica, Club Transmediale, TodaysArt, MIT Media Lab, EMPAC and many others. He was a guest lecturer at Berklee College of Music (Boston, US), the Berlin University of the Arts ( DE) and the Hilversum School of Music and Technology (NL).

**Anselm Venezian Nehls** (DE), born 1981, is a sound and media artist, musician, and co-founder of the HeavyListening label for sound art. He first received training as an audio engineer before studying popular music at Goldsmiths College, London. In 2012, he will receive his master’s degree in sound studies from the Berlin University of the Arts, where he studied under Sam Auinger and Robert Henke, focusing on experimental sound design. Nehls’ projects deal with a wide range of themes and techniques, but always aim at establishing strong connections between the realm of ideas and the physical world.
