Björk - Mutual Core
Andrew Thomas Huang
Björk’s aesthetically stunning video for _Mutual Core_ has been published through the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art’s new YouTube channel, MOCAtv. In addition to its standing as the ninth track on Björk’s 2011 album _Biophilia_, _Mutual Core_ is likely the first song in history to sing tectonic plate metaphors over a electronic beat.
Video director Andrew Thomas Huang, who recently earned accolades at the Cannes Lions New Directors Showcase, visually builds off of Björk’s geological lyrical motifs by integrating the vocalist with the continually evolving sedimentary landscape.
After several minutes of a soft-synthesizer buildup, Björk erupts from the sand into a heavily distorted, pulsing chorus. Huang, not missing a beat, detonates a volcano to parallel Björk’s lyrical passion.
On _Mutual Core_, Huang’s film direction somehow matches the epic bombast that we have come to expect from Björk’s songwriting—a seemingly impossible task!
Filming involved a combination of CGI effects, heavy makeup, and physical props manipulated like puppets against a green screen, and Huang says the direction was inspired by the volcanic surroundings of Iceland.

Andrew Thomas Huang (US) is a filmmaker and artist living in Los Angeles. His filmmaking career was preceded with a love of drawing and painting, paralleled with experimentation in animation, fashion and puppetry. These interests culminated in his short film _Solipsist_, which was honored at the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors Showcase at Cannes Lions and won Best Experimental Short Film at the Slamdance Film Festival. The film caught the attention of Icelandic polymath Björk, leading Andrew to direct her music video for _Mutual Core_, premiering at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Andrew’s work has been showcased worldwide. He graduated with a degree in fine art and animation from the University of Southern California.
