Casastristes
_Casastristes_, launched in 2007, explores housing problems in Spain. Its objective is to serve as an information- and resource-exchange platform through the creation of a reliable public database of empty houses in Spain. _Casastristes_ highlights the abundance of empty houses in contrast to the generally accepted theory of “a lack of buildable land” and tries to explore the origins of the real-estate bubble in Spain. It also questions concepts such as “the advantages of buying a home instead of renting.” Given the extremely high percentage of empty homes in Spain, the purpose is to look for solutions, evaluate the reasons why so many people are still living with their parents at the age of 35, and to propose alternative housing policies.
By providing data visualization and a list of references on the website, the project also aims to offer resources likely to help clarify ambiguous concepts and strengthen the network of citizens, associations, collectives etc. concerned about housing and searching for a way to communicate with each other, become visible and make proposals.
The launch of the web platform and the first visualizations attracted a lot of attention from the media, which is reflected in a huge amount of articles in all kinds of media. Cultural institutions invited us to exhibit the project, which was used to make workshops on mapping empty houses to involve local citizens’ groups. But above all it was the collaboration with social movements and neighborhood associations around Spain working on the topic of the housing problem that shaped the actual image of _Casastristes_. Collaboration consisted in organizing housing safaris to map empty houses and teaching the use of our platform to upload the data.
