The Breadth of a Walnut

Jacklyn Brickman
As an interdisciplinary artist, my work explores relation-making between people and their environments ranging from urban landscapes, municipal land, to wilderness. My practice is rooted in the observation and examination of plants and their processes as a means of understanding, drawing similarities and speculating possibilities for the future. I use instruments and programs ranging from optical lenses to 3d modeling to compare and blur the natural and fantastical through sculpture, installation, video, collaboration and viewer engagement. I employ creative strategies for acclimating to the livability of the changing planet and imagine the future on earth or elsewhere.

What does it mean to have interspecies familial relationships that translate human behaviors to plants? And what if humans could harness the wisdom, science and magic of plants to propagate new planets? What types of exploration and worlds would open up?
9 large-scale, inflatable, mylar walnuts expand and contract their breadth in a movement of timed inflation, a mimesis of human breathing. The breath and breadth of these walnuts morph the room into an otherworldly, myth-like place. Utilizing space blankets, ventilation fans, and a grow lamp, The Breadth of a Walnut is a culmination of research and exploration derived from the sensation of breathing, making black walnut ink, and ideals of comfort.
These large, breathing, pillow-like structures invite viewers to touch, move through, stand underneath and look inside the semi-transparent mylar presenting a speculative transformation from plant to planet. The Breadth of a Walnut represents a juncture in the progression of a young celestial body - a speculative, futuristic mythology that follows the evolution of a fallen black walnut to a risen rotating planet.
