Der H2O Podcast

Stefan Ullreich, Thomas Maier

In a cross-class media project, students collaboratively researched important information about water in all its facets and produced an educational podcast from their findings.

The project is an initiative by young people for young people, aimed at contributing to awareness-building and knowledge transfer on the topic of water, thereby promoting the protection and sustainable use of this valuable resource at the school level.

Through intensive engagement with the topic, project participants became aware that even in Austria, one of Europe's most water-rich countries, must handle water resources very carefully and responsibly.

Thomas Maier works as a vocational teacher at the vocational college in St. Veit an der Glan. After completing his apprenticeship as a chemical laboratory technician, he completed his A-levels in technical chemistry and studied applied business administration and vocational education while working. The father of two and mental trainer is also very keen to make knowledge based on experience available to future generations in digital learning environments.

Stefan Ullreich is a teacher at the vocational school in St. Veit an der Glan and a lecturer at the Carinthian University of Teacher Education. After a 17-year career in sports television production and a degree in journalism and communication sciences, vocational education and media management in vocational training, his teaching focuses primarily on media design and didactics in a (higher) education context.

This cross-class podcast project impresses with its authentic style and high creative quality - particularly remarkable given the limited teaching time at vocational schools. The young people prepare the complex topic of water in an understandable, well-founded and youth-friendly way. The variety of perspectives from different subject areas makes the end product particularly exciting. The “H2O Podcast” discusses very important topics that can be of great benefit to young people in particular. The podcast not only draws the attention of the pupils involved to the topic of water, but also of anyone listening in. The principle of “by young people for young people” is also a perfect idea and helps other pupils by raising awareness.
