PowAirLoop – Der autonome Akkuwechsel für Drohnen
Deutsch

PowAirLoop – The Autonomous Battery Swap for Drones addresses the question of how drones can be used for longer periods, more autonomously, and more independently. The team has developed a system consisting of a drone and a ground station that enables automatic battery swapping. The drone lands autonomously on the station, is mechanically centered, and continues to be powered during the swap. The depleted battery is then removed, a charged one is inserted, and the drone can resume its mission. This eliminates the need for manual battery charging or swapping. The project integrates mechanics, electronics, and software into a functioning system and demonstrates how autonomous drone operations could become more reliable and longer in the future. The team envisions applications in areas such as security surveillance, search and rescue operations, agriculture, and the monitoring of large industrial or infrastructure areas.

Richard Pruckmair (*2006), Mathias Waltner (*2007), Michael Erber (*2007), and Nino Wieland (*2006) are four mechatronics students from HTL Rennweg and form the PowAirLoop team. Their interest in drones, automation, and technical development led to the idea for PowAirLoop after a project involving a drone and custom-programmed software. Together, they combine mechanics, electronics, and software to make autonomous drone operations more independent and efficient.

The jury recognizes the PowAirLoop project as an innovative and practical solution in drone technology. This development addresses an existing problem and provides a solution that enables battery changes without human intervention. The concept of an autonomous ground station that allows drones to change their batteries independently is not only technically sophisticated but also potentially crucial for many civilian applications, such as rescue operations. It is particularly noteworthy that this idea has not remained in the conceptual stage but has already resulted in the development and testing of a functional prototype. For this achievement, the project deservedly receives a Young Professionals Honroary Mention.
