The Prix Ars Electronica Archive is a collection enabling search and viewing of all the submissions since 1987. The award-winning projects are documented with catalogue texts and audio-visual media. All other submissions can be searched by title/artist and displayed with year, category in list form. Please cite the credits (artwork name, artist and photographer) and only use the materials if your article is related to Ars Electronica.

Rein in die zauberhafte Welt des Theaters und Films, raus aus der Komfortzone, das war das Motto!

Das Theater- und Filmprojekt Zusammen zurück ins Leben hat sich in einem demokratischen Prozess über ein Schuljahr entwickelt. Zu Beginn fanden Workshops mit Improvisationstheater, Tanz und Pantomime statt – dort entstand die Idee für das Stück.

 

Was kann die KI – was kann der Mensch?
Die KI denkt in Mustern, der Mensch in Gefühlen.
Sie rechnet, wo wir träumen.
Sie erkennt, wo wir spüren.
Beide suchen – nach Sinn, nach Ordnung, nach Ausdruck.
Die Maschine kann erinnern, ohne zu fühlen.
Der Mensch kann fühlen, ohne zu verstehen.
Zwischen ihnen entsteht ein Raum – ein Dazwischen aus Daten und Sehnsucht, Logik und Chaos.
Hier beginnt das Theater: Wo Code zu Poesie wird.

Hier beginnt der Film: Wo der Mensch sich selbst im Spiegel der Maschine begegnet.


Nach der Aufführung des Stücks entstand der Wunsch, einen Film zu drehen. Die Umsetzung fand nach intensiven Proben im Deep Space 8K des Ars Electronica Center statt.

Dive into the magical world of theater and film, step out of your comfort zone—that was the motto! The theater and film project Zusammen zurück ins Leben (Together Back to Life) developed over the course of a school year through a democratic process. It began with workshops in improvisational theater, dance, and pantomime—and that's where the idea for the play was born.

 

What can AI do – what can humans do?

AI thinks in patterns, humans in feelings.

It calculates where we dream.

It recognizes where we sense.

Both are searching – for meaning, for order, for expression.

The machine can remember without feeling.

Humans can feel without understanding.

A space emerges between them—an in-between of data and longing, logic and chaos.

Here, theater begins: where code becomes poetry.

Here, film begins: where humans encounter themselves in the mirror of the machine.

 

After the performance of the play, the desire arose to make a film. Following intensive rehearsals, the film was realized in the Deep Space 8K of the Ars Electronica Center.

Das Theater- und Filmprojekt wurde von 18 Schüler*innen (*2009–2010) aus 15 Nationen der Klasse P8 der Polytechnischen Schule Urfahr umgesetzt. Einige der Schüler*innen verfügten nur über geringe Deutschkenntnisse. Schauspiel, Bühnenbildgestaltung und Technik wurden von den Schüler*innen realisiert, unterstützt von Theater- und Tanzpädagogin Christine Maria Krenn, Fachbereichsleiter Kreativität Benjamin Mitterhuber und Fachbereichsleiterin IT & Mediendesign Sylvia Aigner.

The theater and film project was realized by 18 students (born between 2009 and 2010) from 15 nations in the class P8 of Urfahr Polytechnic School. Some of the students had only limited German language skills. Acting, set design, and technical aspects were all handled by the students, supported by theater and dance teacher Christine Maria Krenn, head of the Creativity department Benjamin Mitterhuber, and head of the IT & Media Design department Sylvia Aigner.

Das verfilmte Theaterstück Zusammen zurück ins Leben erzählt von einer Zukunft, in der Mensch und KI im Konflikt zueinander stehen, aber schlussendlich an einem gemeinsamen Zusammenleben arbeiten. Der Protagonist Manuel ist mit seinen Freunden im Auto unterwegs, als sie in einen Unfall geraten. Ihnen erscheint der Baum des Lebens, der sie beauftragt, in einem Wettbewerb gegen eine KI zu kämpfen, um wieder zurück ins Leben zu gelangen. Die Geschichte verpackt ein großes und komplexes Thema in eine persönliche und fantasievolle Geschichte und wird mit viel Gefühl, Humor und Kreativität erzählt. Zusammen zurück ins Leben überzeugt mit Hingabe zu Details und interessanten Inszenierungen.

The film adaptation of the play Zusammen zurück ins Leben (Together Back to Life) tells the story of a future where humans and AI are in conflict but ultimately work towards coexistence. The protagonist, Manuel, is traveling with his friends when they are involved in an accident. The Tree of Life appears to them, tasking them with competing against an AI in order to return to life. The story wraps a large and complex theme in a personal and imaginative narrative, told with great emotion, humor, and creativity. Zusammen zurück ins Leben impresses with its attention to detail and engaging staging.
