FOREVER MEETINGS

Sarah Rothberg

FOREVER MEETINGS is a series of software-driven artworks of endlessly evolving conversations between AI-driven avatars.
Built in custom real-time software, each iteration runs fully locally (offline), foregrounding the tendencies of the model itself. Avatars are given opposing personas, a style of conversation, and a prompt (for instance: “gossip about whether the nuclear family is anti-feminist”), and the dialogue unfolds until the prompts refresh and a new theme begins. The works take form as large-scale projections, sculptural wallworks, and screen-based pieces.
Across the series, conversation itself is the medium. The avatars perform cliche cultural scripts, inhabiting exaggerated personas and rhetorical styles as they attempt to reason through questions drawn from the artist's own curiosities, positions, and lived experiences. Because the system continuously reshuffles prompts the dialogue never resolves, it drifts, repeats, contradicts itself, and evolves over time. The fact that the model is locally stored allows the work to act as a time-capsule of the moment the model was initially trained, with the prompts dredging through its ultimately static knowledge base.
The work highlights that LLMs as conversational partners are trained on human language, and reveals and exaggerates the patterns of discourse of its original training set. In its clichés, it's often ridiculous, but occasionally relatable, which can be equally disturbing as it is comforting: someone else has thought these thoughts before.

Sarah Rothberg (US) is an interactive media artist, creating playful, poetic, and usually a-bit-weird experiences that invite you to reconsider your relationships to the world around you. Rothberg's work engages with the impact of new technologies and communication tools, and takes many forms (ranging from installation to performance, software, video, writing, workshops, and experiments with technology). Rothberg is an Assistant Arts Professor at ITP (NYU), an inaugural member of Onassis ONX Studio, and part of collaboratives: MORE&MORE UNLIMITED and IS THIS THING ON?

FOREVER MEETINGS actively resists the easiest interpretation of AI art: the idea that a work about AI, created by AI, often dissolves into its own premise. Instead, Sarah Rothberg’s artist hand remains clearly legible throughout the piece, evident in the construction of the personas, the intricate visual language, and the specific friction each pairing is designed to produce. This visual distinctiveness is what grounds the work. The aesthetic carries a signature that no prompt could reliably reproduce. In a field saturated with artworks exploring AI's inherent aesthetic tendencies, FOREVER MEETINGS retains the essential trace of the artist who made intentional, guiding choices.
