Prix

The Prix Ars Electronica Archive is a collection enabling search and viewing of all the submissions since 1987. The award-winning projects are documented with catalogue texts and audio-visual media. All other submissions can be searched by title/artist and displayed with year, category in list form. Please cite the credits (artwork name, artist and photographer) and only use the materials if your article is related to Ars Electronica.

Micro-Nano Landscape

Suxuan Jiang

Micro-Nano Landscape is a video installation derived from laboratory research on magnetically controlled micro-nano robotic collectives. The work is based on high-magnification microscopic recordings of gravity-defying colloidal formations composed of magnetic microparticles. Under a dual-axis oscillating magnetic field, these particles self-assemble, reconfigure, and execute coordinated motion in dynamic equilibrium.
Rather than simulating natural imagery, the project reveals how engineered matter generates emergent visual orders at microscopic scales. The recorded movements—vertical growth, tilt modulation, adaptive locomotion, swarm coordination—are not animated effects but the direct physical outcome of a precisely modulated magnetic control system. The resulting trajectories evoke fluid landscape formations, yet remain grounded in material robotics research.
The work reframes micro-robotics as a form of programmable matter whose agency emerges through collective behavior rather than anthropomorphic design. By enlarging microscopic documentation into a projected cinematic scale, Micro-Nano Landscape destabilizes the hierarchy between the visible and the invisible. The microscopic becomes spatially immersive; scientific documentation becomes perceptual interface.
Drawing from both contemporary robotics research and the philosophical principle of “seeing the small to understand the grand,” the project proposes scale as a cognitive condition. It suggests that technological systems increasingly operate at dimensions beyond direct perception while nonetheless shaping environments, bodies, and future medical applications. The installation positions art as a perceptual mediator between micro-scale technological operations and human sensory understanding.

Micro-Nano Landscape situates animation in real-time physical phenomena rather than simulation. Its imagery emerges directly from laboratory research: magnetically controlled micro-nano robotic systems observed under high magnification and driven by a precisely programmed magnetic field. The resulting motion forms landscape-like abstractions through measurable forces. The work’s strength lies in treating animation as a process of revealing, not fabricating, as particles self-organize into clusters, continuously reconfiguring and moving in coordinated ways. By scaling microscopic events into an immersive visual field, Suxuan Jiang and collaborator Jiangfan Yu offer a materially grounded, research-driven approach that foregrounds emergence, collective agency, and the aesthetics of otherwise imperceptible technological systems.
