Margi – India’s one stop against online harms

Nidhi Sudhan

At CDF, we factor the incentives, power imbalances, systemic inequities, and user autonomy limitations that shape the current tech ecosystem, into our information literacy projects. We translate the jargon and complexities to fun, creative, and easily accessible solutions to make them effective and engaging.
In 2025, there was a 24% spike in cybercrime, and Indians have lost over Rs. 22,495 crore to online scams. Between 2020 and 2024, the NCRP recorded a 118% rise in online crimes against women and children. When faced with various forms of online harms—harassment, scams, privacy breaches, manipulation, sextortion, child sexual abuse, and mental health challenges—people look online for answers. But solutions are mostly siloed, scattered, and inaccessible.
Margi (prototype) was created as a simple ‘one-stop’ solution, mapping free and open-access preventive resources and responsive solutions in India that tackle a range of techno-social harms. Margi (meaning ‘traveller’) was designed for people to easily find local or national resources and solutions in their language of preference, and reach there in under 3 clicks. The prototype’s homepage allows casual as well as intentional browsers to search using location, language, by harm or content format. The key distinguishing factor is the preventive and responsive approaches; the former guides users like reserachers, educators, and journalists find information literacy resources, mental health toolkits, games, videos, and other methods to help inoculate communities against harms, and the latter helps victims address immediate harm through reporting and redressal mechanisms.
Once complete and accessed and used by digital Indians, the traffic to Margi will help build insights on the types and nodes of various forms of harm across States in India, and help governments plan policy, and allocate funds and resources efficiently to tackle or prevent them.
