S+T+ARTS
STARTS is an initiative of the European Commission to foster alliances of technology and artistic practice. As part of this initiative, the STARTS residencies foster pioneering collaborations and the STARTS Prize honors the most inspired results in the field of creativity and innovation at the crossings of science and technology with the arts. STARTS is funded through various schemes provided by the European Commission.

This residency is hosted by LUCA School of Arts and GLUON, with the support of Pollet Water Group (PWG), Pharma.be, Inopsys, Surplace, CAPTURE, Vlakwa and VITO.
This STARTS residency addresses the problem of pharmaceutical pollution. Over 100,000 tonnes of pharmaceutical products are consumed globally every year (24% in Europe) and since 90% of pharmaceuticals end up in water streams through human urine our aquatic life is swimming in a cocktail of active pharmaceutical ingredients with profound implications for the future of the planet.
During this residency Haseeb Ahmed will explore the cultural and ecological impact of anti-aging medicine in particular, demonstrating how anti-aging medicines epitomize the contradiction of all pharmaceuticals. On the one hand these medicines essentially aim to lengthen our human health and lifespan but on the other hand they have immense unintended ecological consequences. The final art installation will connect aspects of water pollution through anti-aging medicines to our notion of time and our continual search to prolong youth and integrate it all in a new Fountain of Youth.
(The main research was done with the support of a strong Local Expert Group (LEG): the Belgian water treatment systems intergrator Pollet Water Group (PWG); Pharma.be, the General Association of the Innovative Medicines Industry; INOPSYS NV, a company that develops and operates on-side solutions for side stream treatment; the Flemish design studio ‘Surplace’; the Centre for Advanced Process Technology for Urban Resource recovery (CAPTURE); Flanders Knowledge Centre Water (Vlakwa) and the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO).)
