Digital Musics & Sound Art Anerkennung - Honorary Mention 2009

Waldstück

Christoph Korn
What can be heard is a 24-hour, unedited field recording from a section of a forest. The audio recording has been transferred to a web server and will be successively deleted, randomly and automatically, over a period of three years (on average, and subdivided into small and smallest units, approx. 78 seconds per day). After three years, nothing more will be able to be heard. The deletion process began on February 5, 2008.
The 24-hour audio recording was made by Christoph Korn on June 22 and 23, 2007. The section of the forest where the recording took place is located near Dachau (DE). “Waldstück” (“Section of a Forest”) is solely a piece of work about this section of a forest. No statement is made about “Dachau”, neither is there an intention to do so. The work, however, searches for the proximity to what “Dachau” stands for, about which it cannot say anything.
"Waldstück" [section of a forest] was produced by Hessischer Rundfunk / Frankfurt and Deutschlandfunk / Cologne, with funding by Stiftung Kunstfonds / Bonn and in cooperation with wemove digital solutions/Berlin.
Christoph Korn (DE), born in 1965. From 1992 to 1998 he studied political Science and philosophy and started his artistic work in the early 1 990s. His solo work operates at the interface of audio and media art. An essential part of this work is the phenomenon of “duration”. In the last few years, he has increasingly put this into practice using the strategy of deleting and withdrawing. His works have been performed at numerous international festivals of Contemporary music and media-art. He is a lecturer and visiting lecturer at several universities and has received grants and scholarships for composition and media-art.
