TONSPUR für einen öffentlichen raum
Georg Weckwerth,
Peter Szely
Tonspur (soundtrack), this classical term from visual and acoustic media, was chosen as the title of an innovative project featuring different sound works for public spaces. The project has been set in Vienna since 2003 and in Berlin since 2009.
Here, in Vienna, at the MuseumsQuartier (MQ), a still new cultural venue – there, in Berlin, at the centuries-old Schlossplatz (Palace Square) that is again in a state of transition. Just as people automatically stroll through the baroque vaults of the “TONSPUR”_passageway in the historic Fischer von Erlach wing of the former imperial stables in the heart of Vienna, others may at the moment cross the 150-meter-long walkway with its long string of benches at the giant Schlossplatz in Berlin’s new historical center. For now that the GDR’s Palast der Republik (Palace of the Republic) has been torn down, Berlin’s city palace will be rebuilt as the Humboldt Forum.
Specifically for these transitory sites with their eventful histories, international artists have conceived and implemented computer-controlled sound works for the TONSPUR series. Their multi-channeled compositions go well beyond standard stereophonic experiences to create captivating acoustic architectures and sound spaces that can be entered by the public.
In both Vienna and Berlin, “TONSPUR für einen öffentlichen raum” addresses all those who want to experience the city and art with eyes and ears open.
